How to Fax IRS Exempt Organizations

Form 1023 itself is filed online through Pay.gov and cannot be faxed. Almost everything that comes after it can be, and often must be: checking on a pending application, asking for expedited processing, answering a CP120A notice, contesting an automatic revocation, and requesting a copy of a determination letter. All of it goes to one fax number at EO Determinations in Cincinnati.

The Fax Number

EO Determinations fax: 855-204-6184
IRS, EO Determinations, Attn: Manager, EO Correspondence, P.O. Box 2508, Room 6-403, Cincinnati, OH 45202 for mail.

The IRS publishes this number on its Form 1023 FAQ, its Exempt Organizations contact page, its application status page and its CP120A notice page. Confirm it on IRS.gov before sending.

What You Can Fax There

A status inquiry on a pending application. Include the organization name, EIN, the form you filed, and the date on your Pay.gov confirmation. You must be an officer or director, or hold a valid Form 2848 or 8821.

An expedite request. The IRS will move an application up the queue for a documented reason, such as a grant with a deadline or a disaster response. The request goes to the same number.

A response to a CP120A notice. The notice tells you your exemption was revoked for not filing returns. The documents that answer it are faxed to 855-204-6184.

Auto-revocation correspondence. A ruling or determination letter showing you had no filing requirement, sent to have the organization removed from the revocation list.

Form 4506-B. A request for a copy of an organization’s determination letter or exemption application. Up to 60 days to process.

What You Cannot Fax There

Form 1023 and Form 1023-EZ. Both are filed only through Pay.gov, and a faxed application is not treated as filed. Form 990-series returns are also not faxed.

What to Put on Every Page

The organization’s name and EIN, and the application or case number if you have one. EO Correspondence handles a large volume, and an unlabelled page is a lost page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Cost and what you get
How much does it cost to fax IRS Exempt Organizations?
$1.00 for up to 10 pages. No account, no subscription, and nothing printed on your documents.
Can I fax the IRS for free?
Free services stop at three pages and several print their own advertising across the cover page. That advert would arrive at EO Determinations in your organization’s name. For correspondence about your exemption, a dollar is the safer choice.
Is there a catch to $1.00 for faxing EO Determinations?
No. Ten pages, no account, no card kept on file, nothing that renews. If the fax cannot be delivered the money goes back to your card automatically.
Sending a fax
How do I check the status of my 1023 application by fax?
Fax a short letter to 855-204-6184 with the organization name, EIN, the form filed, and the date on your Pay.gov confirmation. You must be an authorized officer or director, or hold a Form 2848 or 8821. The IRS does not accept email for this.
How do I request expedited processing?
Fax the request to 855-204-6184 with the reason. The IRS considers expediting for documented needs such as a grant with a deadline, a disaster relief purpose, or IRS-caused delay. Include supporting evidence.
What is a CP120A notice and how do I respond?
It tells you the organization’s tax-exempt status was automatically revoked for not filing required returns for three years. The notice says to fax your documents to 855-204-6184 or mail them to TEGE in Cincinnati.
Do I need an account to fax EO Determinations?
No. Upload the document, type 855-204-6184, and pay. There is no sign-up and no password. The only thing we ask for is an email address for your confirmation.
Who is allowed to inquire about an application?
An officer or director authorized to represent the organization, or a tax professional holding a valid Form 2848 or Form 8821 for it. Anyone else will not get an answer.
Can I add a cover sheet for EO Determinations?
Yes, on the send page. Put the organization name, EIN, what the fax is about, and the page count on it.
Is my correspondence stored after sending?
No. It is deleted from the servers once the fax has gone. There is no account and no archive.

Receiving a reply
Does the IRS fax determination letters back?
Usually by mail. If you ever need to receive a fax from the IRS, our sister service GetAFax.com provides a number for $5 for 24 hours, with anything received arriving in your email as a PDF.
Delivery, proof and safety
Does the IRS confirm receipt?
No. Your confirmation email is your record: destination, page count and the exact time their machine accepted it. If you need to confirm processing, call 877-829-5500 with that confirmation in hand.
More questions
Can I fax Form 1023 to the IRS?
No. Form 1023 and Form 1023-EZ are filed only through Pay.gov, and have been since 2020. A faxed application is not accepted. What you fax is the correspondence around it: status checks, expedite requests, notice responses.
What if my fax does not go through?
You are refunded automatically and you get an email explaining what happened. Retrying costs nothing.
What is Form 4506-B?
A request for a copy of an exempt organization’s determination letter or its exemption application. It goes to 855-204-6184 and can take up to 60 days to process.
Should I put the EIN on every page?
Yes. EO Correspondence handles a large volume and faxed pages get separated. The organization name, EIN and any application number on each page keeps them together.
Can I fax EO Determinations from outside the United States?
Yes. The service runs in a browser, so your location does not matter, and international cards work. The IRS number is a US number, so this site covers it.
Is this Exempt Organizations page tax advice?
No. It covers how to reach EO Determinations by fax and what they accept. Whether your organization qualifies for exemption and how to respond to a specific notice are for your adviser, and IRS.gov controls.
